Tis the Season for Romance
Romantic love makes the world more colorful. It sounds like a cheesy greeting card, doesn’t it? And yet we know it’s true. Scramble those words a bit, and you come up with another truism: A colorful world makes love more romantic.
Proof is everywhere in and around Kalispell during the quieting season of autumn. Take a drive up the Middle Fork of the Flathead River and gaze over a glade of cottonwoods, their leaves golden and glittering in the cool breeze. Breathe in the misty morning air as it blows off the ponds at Woodland Park. Such scenes breed a certain peaceful nostalgia, make you want to snuggle into a warm shoulder.
So if you’re looking for a place to reconnect with your spouse or cement a bond of blossoming love, Kalispell is the place to be when the leaves start to turn and the temperatures start to dip.
Here are four romantic days that the two of you will remember for years to come:
Sail Away Together
First off, pick up provisions for the day: freshly baked bread from Ceres Bakery, a bottle of wine from Mission Mountain Winery, some whole wheat ravioli in marinara and Moroccan beet salad from the deli at Mountain Valley Foods. Then, head for the marina at Dayton Harbor on Flathead Lake. There, you can hire a sailboat for the day and explore the islands, inlets and vast open water of the largest natural lake west of the Mississippi River. Not sure if your sailing skills are up to navigating the lake? Hitch a ride on the Far West, a historic Montana cruise ship that offers relaxing tours of the lake.
Roll Over Beethoven
Kalispell is a wonderful locale for blending adventure with culture. Begin with breakfast at the Split Rock Café, a relaxed but elegant breakfast spot just off Main Street. After filling up on gourmet coffee and the famous biscuits and gravy, walk just down the street to Wheaton’s Cycle and rent a couple bikes for the day. Then, spend a relaxed day pedaling along the peaceful, easygoing Rails-to-Trails projects around Kalispell; or take a crack at something more challenging. Once you’ve gotten your breath of fresh air, don your finest for an elegant dinner at Blue Canyon Grill, followed by a concert by the Glacier Symphony Orchestra, one of the best ensembles in the northern Rockies.
Graze the Valley
Spend your day tasting the flavors and goods of the local area. Start off with breakfast at Skyes Diner, a Kalispell staple that offers delicious traditional breakfast fare plus lighter options including Skyes granola, made onsite and paired with locally made Kalispell Kreamery Greek yogurt. While away a leisurely morning perusing the downtown shops, trying on cowboy boots at Western Outdoors, marveling at the recycled metal sculptures and handmade jewelry at Sassafras and outfitting your fantasy mountain hideaway at Beckman’s Fine Furnishings. Grab lunch to go at Bonelli’s, another favorite among locavores, and take your picnic to Woodland Park, the city’s lush oasis, where you can find a quiet spot to call your own. Add a touch of historic elegance to the afternoon with a tour of the Conrad Mansion, just up the street. Finally, finish the day at 406 Bar & Grillwith a tapas dinner of delicious indulgences — buffalo sliders, sweet potato truffle fries, curry clams and much more.
Find Peace in the Park
Hit the road early for a breathtaking day hike into the heart of Glacier National Park. This time of year, the Avalanche Lake Trail is at its finest, offering eye-popping fall colors all the way to the deep emerald waters of the lake. Take a picnic lunch and enjoy some true solitude. Afterward, reward yourself with a bit of luxury with dinner at West Glacier’s Belton Chalet, one of the grand historic properties that has defined the rustic character of the park since its inception. Fine food and a cozy atmosphere is sure to wash away any chill from the day.
