The only Montanans who sleep through the winter are the bears. The rest of us flock to the Flathead Valley with skis and boards to revel in feet and feet of powdery fun. Staying in Kalispell puts you equidistant from two great resort experiences. To the north, there’s Whitefish Mountain, a perennial national favorite and one of the 10 largest ski areas in the country. To the south, there’s Blacktail Mountain, a local’s secret with great intermediate terrain and stunning views of Flathead Lake. Both resorts also offer cross-country skiing and even snowmobiling opportunities. You really can’t go wrong, especially if you split your time between the two of them.
Whitefish Mountain Resort, formerly known as Big Mountain, is a world class resort with more than 3,000 acres of terrain. One of the 10 largest ski resorts in America, its 94 marked trails cover 2,353 vertical feet and offer something for skiers and snowboarders of all levels.
Blacktail Mountain, just south of Kalispell is a local’s favorite. It’s affordable and family friendly with a cozy lodge for fireside lunch breaks and a full bar and grill on the upper level for après ski. Its north-facing slopes, high above Flathead Lake, offer spectacular views and consistent snow through mid-April.
